Napoleon and European Romanticism

LibraryMasterpiecesNapoleon and European Romanticism

At the beginning of the 19th century, trends started to diverge. Napoleon’s autograph manuscripts and Goethe’s and Hegel’s writings contrasted sharply with the works of Madame de Stael and Chateaubriand.

Romantic sensibility is present in the famous autographs of German poet Novalis (Hymns to Night) and English poets Byron, Shelley and Keats. Russia is represented by Pushkin and Gogol, and the 19th century novel by Balzac and Stifter.
