Enlightenment and Revolution

LibraryMasterpieces of the collectionEnlightenment and Revolution

The Age of Enlightenment was sparked by Buffon, Voltaire, Diderot, d’Alembert and the German philosophers Kant and Lessing. It crystallized with the two leading figures, Montesquieu and Rousseau.

The English novel is also present with a number of prominent literary figures including Daniel Defoe, Richardson, Swift, Fielding and Sterne.

The Bodmer Foundation houses a fine music collection. The prime example is the unique autograph score of Mozart’s Quintet KV 593.

But the entire Bodmer collection revolves around Goethe. It is home to many original editions of his works, including autograph manuscripts of Faust.
